FREE Sources of Information for Government Finance Officials

Listed below are some “free” websites that provide current topical information for Government Finance Professionals. Most of the websites provide subscriptions to newsletters, so all you need to do is sign up to receive information.*

  • American City & County – Provides relevant information to city, county and state officials who are charged with developing and implementing government policy, programs and projects. American City & County is a tool for elected and appointed public servants, and provides readers with news, government trends, policy alternatives and operational solutions.
  • Electronic Municipal Market Access – EMMA is operated by the Municipal Securities Register Board. EMMA is designated by the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission as the official source for municipal securities data and disclosure documents. The website provides free public access to objective municipal market information and interactive tools for investors, municipal entities, and others. EMMA supports municipal market transparency but is not a platform for buying or selling bonds.
  • Governing – Provides original and custom content and breaking news of special interest to state and local government readers. Helps public leaders identify novel approaches to both entrenched and emerging challenges serving residents and running their organizations.
  • Internal Revenue Service – the IRS website and e-News subscriptions provides a variety of information on key tax activities. They provide taxpayers services that help them understand and meet their tax responsibilities and to enforce tax laws.
  • International City/County Management Association -  Provides content to increase the proficiency of city managers, county managers, and other local government administrators, and to strengthen the quality of local government through professional management.
  • Maryland Association of Counties – MACo is the non-profit, non-partisan voice of all 24 Maryland counties promoting effective, efficient government through advocacy, education, and collaboration. The Association’s membership consists of county elected officials and representatives from Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City.
  • Municipal Securities and Register Board - Provides information and research regarding municipal securities market rules and regulations. MSRB also provides quarterly e-newsletters regarding compliance obligations of securities dealers and advisors and recent MSRB strategic activities.
  • System for Award Management – SAM.gov is the official website of the U.S. Government to register to do business with (or receive grant awards from) the U.S. Government. You may also use this website to update, renew, or check the status of your entity registration.
